Valve Clearance Check

  1. Ensure engine is cold. Position No. 1 piston at TDC of compression stroke. Measure valve clearance between camshaft lobe and valve tappet at "A". See Fig 1 . If clearance is not within specification, replace adjustment shim. See PROTEGE 1.5L VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  2. Turn crankshaft approximately 360° clockwise positioning No. 4 piston at TDC of compression stroke. Measure valve clearance between camshaft lobe and valve tappet at "B". See Fig 1 . If clearance is not within specification, replace adjustment shim. See PROTEGE 1.5L VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
