CLOCKSPRING R & I: Removal

  1. Before proceeding, read and understand all air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  . Ensure vehicle front wheels are in straight-ahead position and steering column shaft alignment mark is at 12 o'clock position.
  2. Remove lower right and left moldings from instrument panel by pulling up and snapping out of retainers. Remove instrument panel lower trim panel and lower steering column shroud.
  3. Remove air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE R & I  . Disconnect speed control wiring harness (if equipped) from steering wheel. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL R & I  . Disconnect clockspring (sliding contact assembly) wire harness. Ensure clockspring internal locking mechanism is engaged (clockspring should not turn more than 45 degrees in either direction). Remove anti-theft contact and key warning contact from ignition cylinder. Depress 3 retaining tabs to release clockspring from steering column See Figure . Remove clockspring from steering column shaft.
