CLOCKSPRING R & I: Removal

- Before proceeding, read and understand all air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Ensure vehicle front wheels are in straight-ahead position and steering column shaft alignment mark is at 12 o'clock position.
- Remove lower right and left moldings from instrument panel by pulling up and snapping out of retainers. Remove instrument panel lower trim panel and lower steering column shroud.
- Remove air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE R & I . Disconnect speed control wiring harness (if equipped) from steering wheel. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL R & I . Disconnect clockspring (sliding contact assembly) wire harness. Ensure clockspring internal locking mechanism is engaged (clockspring should not turn more than 45 degrees in either direction). Remove anti-theft contact and key warning contact from ignition cylinder. Depress 3 retaining tabs to release clockspring from steering column See Figure . Remove clockspring from steering column shaft.
