Procedure 1: Deployment With Wiring Intact

This procedure assumes air bag wiring is intact, AIR BAG warning light indicates no fault codes, system operation check is okay, and vehicle's battery is still in place (or one has been provided for testing). Perform this procedure outdoors and at least 20 feet away from other personnel, as air bag makes a loud noise upon deployment.
- Before proceeding, read and understand all air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS . Clear front seat of all loose objects. DO NOT permit any occupants inside vehicle. Ensure that air bag module is securely mounted to steering wheel. If air bag module is loose, go to PROCEDURE 2 below. While standing outside of vehicle, reach in driver's window and turn ignition switch to RUN position.
- Observe AIR BAG warning light. If AIR BAG warning light displays fault codes, go to PROCEDURE 2 below. If AIR BAG warning light illuminates 4-8 seconds and goes out, system is intact. Air bag may be deployed from steering wheel location. Turn ignition switch OFF. Locate and disconnect safing sensor connector. Safing sensor is mounted to right side "B" pillar (rear of passenger door) behind corner trim panel. See Figure .
- Connect a jumper wire between circuits No. 611 (White/Orange wire) and No. 614 (Gray/Orange wire) of safing sensor connector. See Fig 1 . Ensure NO occupants are in vehicle. Disconnect left front impact sensor connector. Sensor is located on left side of upper radiator support. To deploy air bag, connect a second jumper wire between circuit No. 617 (Pink/Orange wire) of left front sensor connector and ground. Air bag should deploy.
- If air bag does not deploy, go to PROCEDURE 2 below. If air bag deploys, a loud noise will be heard, and air bag material will be visible. Allow at least 10 minutes for cooling and dissipation of air bag effluents before approaching vehicle. Air bag is now inoperative and vehicle may be scrapped in usual manner.
