Possible Causes

An inoperative AIR BAG light may be caused by a burned-out bulb, an open circuit in wiring for AIR BAG light circuit or a loss of voltage at terminals No. 1.

  1. Check For Battery Voltage  - Deactivate air bag system. See COMPLETE SYSTEM DEACTIVATION  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Disconnect diagnostic monitor. Diagnostic monitor is located on left side of steering column under instrument panel. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between terminals No. 1 (Purple/Orange wire) and No. 3 (Black/White wire) of diagnostic monitor Gray connector. See Fig 1 . If battery voltage is present, go to step 2). If battery voltage is not present, locate and repair open circuit in wiring between fuse block and terminal No. 1 of diagnostic monitor connector. Ensure fuse No. 18 in instrument panel fuse block is good. Also, check for a good ground at terminal No. 3 of diagnostic monitor connector. Repair as necessary.

  2. Check For Open Light Circuit  - With diagnostic monitor disconnected and ignition on, check AIR BAG light operation. If AIR BAG light is on, replace diagnostic monitor. If AIR BAG light is off, go to step 3).
  3. Check Instrument Cluster  - If vehicle is equipped with a digital instrument cluster, go to step 4). If vehicle is equipped with an analog instrument cluster, locate and repair open in AIR BAG light circuit. Open could be caused by burned-out bulb, open connectors, pushed-out terminals, or blown fuse. Repair as necessary.
  4. Check Digital Instrument Cluster  - Remove plastic locking wedge from diagnostic monitor connector. Measure voltage between terminals No. 4 (Black/Yellow wire) and No. 3 (Black/White wire) of diagnostic monitor connector. If battery voltage is present, replace instrument cluster. If battery voltage is not present, check instrument cluster connectors. If connectors are okay, replace instrument cluster.
