Diagnostic Aids

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 14 other vehicles, including the 1996 Ford RV Cutaway, 1996 Ford Pickup, 1996 Ford F-Super Duty, 1996 Ford Econoline, and 1996 Ford Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

  1. 1) DTC 0704: Check CPP Parameter Identification (PID)

    Ensure scan tool is connected to Data Link Connector (DLC). See VEHICLE PREPARATION & EQUIPMENT HOOKUP  under QUICK TEST. Using scan tool, access CPP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. With clutch pedal released, observe CPP PID reading. If CPP PID reading indicates ON only, go to next step. If CPP PID reading does not indicate ON only, go to step  4).
  2. 2) Check CPP Switch

    Turn ignition on. Disconnect CPP switch. If CPP PID reading switches to OFF, replace CPP switch. Reconnect all connectors and confirm repair using scan tool and monitoring CPP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu while operating clutch pedal. If CPP PID reading does not switch to OFF, go to next step.
  3. 3) Check For Short To Power

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and Tan/Light Blue wire at CPP switch wiring harness connector. If battery voltage is present, locate and repair short to power in Tan/Light Blue wire. Reconnect all connectors and confirm repair using scan tool and monitoring CPP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu while operating clutch pedal. If battery voltage not present, short to battery voltage is at terminal No. 29 at PCM. Inspect PCM 104-pin connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Reconnect all connectors and go to step  11).
  4. 4) Check CPP PID

    Depress clutch pedal to floor. Check CPP PID reading. If CPP PID reading indicates OFF only, go to next step. If CPP PID reading does not indicate OFF only, fault may be intermittent. Go to step  12).
  5. 5) Check Fuse No. 18 (10-Amp)

    Remove and inspect fuse No. 18 from instrument panel fuse block. If fuse blown, go to next step to check for short to ground. If fuse is okay, go to step  8).
  6. 6) Check For Short To Ground

    Ensure CPP switch is disconnected. Measure resistance between ground and White/Purple wire at CPP switch wiring harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, locate and repair short to ground in White/Purple wire. Reconnect all connectors and confirm repair using scan tool and monitoring CPP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu while operating clutch pedal. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  7. 7) Check For Short To Ground

    Disconnect PCM 104-pin connector. Measure resistance between ground and Tan/Light Blue wire at CPP switch wiring harness connector. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, locate and repair short to ground in Tan/Light Blue wire. Reconnect all connectors and confirm repair using scan tool and monitoring CPP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu while operating clutch pedal. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or more, check for short to ground at terminal No. 29 at PCM. Inspect PCM connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Reconnect all connectors and go to next step.
  8. 8) Check For Open Circuit

    Turn ignition off. Ensure CPP switch is disconnected. Measure resistance of White/Purple wire between No. 18 fuse holder and CPP switch wiring harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, circuit is okay. Go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open circuit in White/Purple wire. Confirm repair using scan tool and monitoring CPP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu while operating clutch pedal.
  9. 9) Check CPP Switch

    Turn ignition on. Connect a jumper wire between Tan/Light Blue wire and White/Purple wire at CPP switch wiring harness connector. Check CPP PID reading. If CPP PID reading does not indicate ON, go to next step. If CPP PID reading indicates ON, replace CPP switch. Reconnect all connectors and confirm repair using scan tool and monitoring CPP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu while operating clutch pedal.
  10. 10) Check Circuit No. 306

    Disconnect jumper wire. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin connector, and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Measure resistance between Tan/Light Blue wire at CPP switch wiring harness connector and test pin No. 29 at breakout box. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, check for open at terminal No. 29 at PCM. Inspect PCM connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary, reconnect all connectors and go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open circuit in Tan/Light Blue wire. Reconnect all connectors and confirm repair using scan tool and monitoring CPP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu while operating clutch pedal.
  11. 11) Confirm PCM Fault

    Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access CPP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. While observing CPP PID reading, depress and release clutch pedal. If CPP PID switches from ON to OFF, no problem is indicated at this time. If CPP PID does not switch from ON to OFF, replace PCM. Confirm repair using scan tool and monitoring CPP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu while operating clutch pedal.
  12. 12) Check For Intermittent

    Ensure CPP switch is disconnected. Turn ignition on. Connect a jumper wire between Tan/Light Blue wire and White/Purple wire at CPP switch wiring harness connector. Using scan tool, access CPP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. CPP PID should indicate ON. While observing CPP PID, wiggle and bend small sections of wiring harness working toward PCM. If fault is indicated (CPP PID switches to OFF), isolate fault and repair as necessary. Reconnect all connectors and confirm repair using scan tool and monitoring CPP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu while operating clutch pedal. If no fault is indicated, go to next step.
  13. 13) Check For Intermittent Short To Power

    Ensure CPP switch is disconnected. Remove fuse No. 18 at instrument panel fuse block. Turn ignition on. Connect a jumper wire between Tan/Light Blue wire and White/Purple wire at CPP switch wiring harness connector. Using scan tool, access CPP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. CPP PID reading should indicate OFF. While observing CPP PID, wiggle and bend small sections of wiring harness working toward PCM. If fault is indicated (CPP PID switches to ON), isolate fault and repair as necessary. Reconnect all connectors and confirm repair using scan tool and monitoring CPP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu while operating clutch pedal. If no fault is indicated, no problem is indicated at this time. Confirm repair using scan tool and monitoring CPP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu while operating clutch pedal and repeat QUICK TEST .
