  1. On Van, remove engine from vehicle and install on engine stand. See ENGINE. On Pickup, disconnect battery ground cable from both batteries. Drain cooling system and remove radiator. Remove turbocharger. See TURBOCHARGER .
  2. On all models, disconnect fuel supply lines at rear of both cylinder heads. Remove fuel line banjo bolt from fuel pump and remove fuel line assembly.
  3. On Pickup, remove generator bolt and position heater hose aside. Rotate drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove drive belt. Disconnect generator electrical connectors. Remove generator bracket with generator attached. Disconnect MAP sensor and position aside.
  4. On all models, remove oil dipstick tube. Disconnect 2 main engine harness connectors from valve cover gasket and remove valve cover. Disconnect electrical connectors from fuel injectors and glow plugs. Remove valve cover gasket. Remove high pressure oil pump line from right cylinder head.
  5. Remove exhaust backpressure line. Remove glow plug relay bracket nuts and ground wire. Remove heater hose from right cylinder head. On Pickup, remove heater plenum retainers and remove outer half of heater plenum.
CAUTION: Failure to remove oil rail drain plugs before removing fuel injectors will allow oil to enter the combustion chamber, and could result in hydrostatic lock and severe engine damage.

CAUTION: Failure to remove oil and fuel from fuel injector bores after fuel injector is removed, could result in hydrostatic lock and severe engine damage.
  8. Vacuum fuel and oil from fuel injector bores using Rotunda Vacuum Pump (021-00037). Remove rocker arms and push rods, marking all components for installation to original location. Remove glow plugs.
  9. On Pickup, raise and support vehicle. Remove right turbocharger exhaust inlet pipe from exhaust manifold. Lower vehicle. Remove ground strap from rear of cylinder head.
  10. On all models, disconnect fuel return line from front of cylinder head. Remove 4 inboard fuel injector shoulder bolts. Remove cylinder head bolts. Lift cylinder head from engine and remove head gasket.
