Hydraulic Valve Lifters: Inspection

  1. Service lifters as an assembly only. Disassemble and clean lifters before testing. Test lifters with hydraulic lifter test fluid. DO NOT interchange parts between lifters.
  2. Leak-down rate on hydraulic lifters is 10-50 seconds with 1/16" (1.6 mm) plunger travel under 50 lb. (23 kg) load. Replace lifter if it fails leak-down test, or if it is worn or damaged.
