Symptom Checks

Perform the following:

• Perform QUICK TEST. See appropriate TESTS W/CODES - EEC -IV article. If code is present, perform appropriate CIRCUIT TEST.
• Ensure engine is operating at normal operating temperature.
• Check power to MAP/BARO sensor. See step 3) of CIRCUIT TEST S in appropriate TESTS W/CODES - EEC-IV article below.
• TESTS W/CODES - EEC-IV (5.0L)
• TESTS W/CODES - EEC-IV (5.8L)
• Check ignition system. See IGNITION SYSTEMS in appropriate appropriate SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article below.
• SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - EEC-IV (5.0L)
• SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - EEC-IV (5.8L)
• Check idle speed. See IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE in appropriate ADJUSTMENTS article below.
• ADJUSTMENTS - 5.0L
• ADJUSTMENTS - 5.8L
• Check Fuel Evaporation (EVAP) system. See EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in appropriate SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article.
• If surge occurs with A/C on, check A/C clutch operation. See appropriate A/C-HEATER SYSTEM article in the AIR CONDITIONING & HEAT section.
• Check Fuel Evaporation (EVAP) system. See EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in appropriate SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article below.
• Check EGR system. See EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in appropriate SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article below.
• Check air injection (if equipped). See EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in appropriate SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article below.
• Check air intake system. Ensure throttle plate and linkages operate properly.
• Check fuel delivery system. See FUEL SYSTEM in appropriate appropriate SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article below.
• Check engine mechanical condition. Check compression, camshaft, valve train components, etc.

• SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - EEC-IV (5.8L)
• Check Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S). Go to step 21) of CIRCUIT TEST H in appropriate TESTS W/CODES - EEC-IV article below.
• Ensure speed (cruise) control system is functioning properly.
