Symptom Checks

Perform the following:
- Perform QUICK TEST. See appropriate TESTS W/CODES - EEC -IV article. If code is present, perform appropriate CIRCUIT TEST.
- Ensure engine is operating at normal operating temperature.
- Check power to MAP/BARO sensor. See step 3) of CIRCUIT TEST S in appropriate TESTS W/CODES - EEC-IV article below.

- SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - EEC-IV (5.8L)
- SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - 7.3L DIESEL

- Check idle speed. See IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE in appropriate ADJUSTMENTS article below.

- Check Fuel Evaporation (EVAP) system. See EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in appropriate I - SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article below.
- If surge occurs with A/C on, check A/C clutch operation. See A/C-HEATER SYSTEM in the AIR CONDITIONING & HEAT section.
- Check Fuel Evaporation (EVAP) system. See EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in appropriate I - SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article below.
- Check EGR system. See EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in appropriate I - SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article below.
- Check air injection (if equipped). See EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in appropriate I - SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article below.
- Check air intake system. Ensure throttle plate and linkages operate properly.
- Check fuel delivery system. See FUEL SYSTEM in appropriate I - SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article below.

- SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - EEC-IV (5.8L)
- SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - 7.3L DIESEL
- SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - EEC-IV (7.5L)
- Check engine mechanical condition. Check compression, camshaft, valve train components, etc.
- Check Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S). Go to step 21) of CIRCUIT TEST H in appropriate TESTS W/CODES - EEC-IV article.

- Ensure speed (cruise) control system is functioning properly.
