Diagnostic Aids

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Ford Windstar. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

This test is for Windstar only. Perform this test when instructed during QUICK TEST  or if directed by other test procedures. This test is used to diagnose the following:

  1. 1) Check Secondary Ignition

    Check spark plug, plug wires, coils and all connectors for damage, looseness or shorting. Repair or replace as necessary. If secondary ignition looks okay, go to next step.
    WARNING: Unless otherwise instructed, PCM must not be connected to breakout box when performing ignition system testing.
  2. 2)

    Install EI Diagnostic Harness Turn ignition off. Install EI Diagnostic Harness (007-00059) to EEC-V Breakout Box (014-000950) and ICM. DO NOT  connect CKP sensor tee or coil tee. Use EI (High Data Rate) 6 overlay. Connect diagnostic harness negative lead to battery negative terminal. Leave positive lead disconnected. Set diagnostic harness box type switch to "4/6" cylinder position. If vehicle will start and run, go to step 22). If vehicle will not start, go to next step.
  3. 3) Check PWR GND To ICM

    Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between breakout box test pins J7 (B-) and J27 (PWR GND). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open PWR GND circuit to ICM. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  .
  4. 4) Check VPWR To ICM

    Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between breakout box test pins J7 (B-) and J51 (VPWR I). If voltage is 10.5 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10.5 volts, repair open VPWR circuit to ICM. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  .
  5. 5) Check CKP+ At ICM

    Leave ignition on. Set DVOM to DC scale. Measure voltage between breakout box test pins J7 (B-) and J35 (CKP+ I). If DC voltage is 1.0-2.0 volts, go to step 11). If DC voltage is not 1.0-2.0 volts, go to next step.
  6. 6) Check CKP+ For Bias Fault

    Turn ignition off. Leave DVOM on DC scale. Disconnect CKP sensor wiring harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between breakout box test pins J7 (B-) and J35 (CKP+ I). If DC voltage is 1.0-2.0 volts, go to next step. If DC voltage is not 1.0-2.0 volts, go to step 19).
  7. 7) Check CKP- For Bias Fault

    Leave ignition on and DVOM on DC scale. Measure voltage between breakout box test pins J7 (B-) and J48 (CKP- I). If DC voltage is not 1.0-2.0 volts, go to next step. If DC voltage is 1.0-2.0 volts, replace CKP sensor. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  .
  8. 8) Check Bias Fault

    If bias voltage reading in step 7) was less than 1.0 volt, go to next step. If bias voltage reading in step 7) was 1.0 volt or more, go to step 10).
  9. 9) Check CKP- Circuit For Short To Ground (Bias Low Fault)

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect ICM from ICM tee. Measure resistance between breakout box test pins J7 (B-) and J48 (CKP- I). If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, replace ICM. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  . If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair CKP- circuit short to ground. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  .
  10. 10) Check CKP- Circuit For Short To Power (Bias High Fault)

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect ICM from ICM tee. Set DVOM on DC scale. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between breakout box test pins J7 (B-) and J48 (CKP- I). If voltage is less than 0.5 volt, replace ICM. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  . If voltage is 0.5 volt or more, repair CKP- circuit short to power. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  .
  11. 11) Check CKP Voltage At ICM

    Set DVOM on AC scale. While cranking engine, measure voltage between breakout box test pins J35 (CKP+ I) and J48 (CKP- I). If AC voltage is less than 0.4 volt, go to next step. If AC voltage is 0.4 volt or more, go to CIRCUIT TEST JC.
  12. 12)

    Leave DVOM on AC scale. Disconnect ICM from ICM tee. While cranking engine, measure voltage between breakout box test pins J35 (CKP+ I) and J48 (CKP- I). If AC voltage is less than 0.4 volt, go to next step. If AC voltage is 0.4 volt or more, replace ICM. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  .
  13. 13) Check CKP Circuit Resistance

    Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between breakout box test pins J35 (CKP+ I) and J48 (CKP- I). If resistance is 2580-2700 ohms, go to step 17). If resistance is not 2580-2700 ohms, go to next step.
  14. 14) Check Resistance High Or Low

    If resistance is more than 2580 ohms (high), go to next step. If resistance is 2580 ohms or less, go to step 18).
  15. 15) Check CKP+ Circuit Open; High Fault

    Turn ignition off. Connect CKP sensor tee to CKP sensor and wiring harness connector. Measure resistance between breakout box test pins J31 (CKP+ S) and J35 (CKP+ I). If resistance is less than 2050 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 2050 ohms or more, repair open CKP+ circuit. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  .
  16. 16) Check CKP- Circuit Open; High Fault

    Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between breakout box test pins J32 (CKP- S) and J48 (CKP- I). If resistance is less than 2050 ohms, replace CKP sensor. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  . If resistance is 2050 ohms or more, repair open CKP- circuit. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  .
  17. 17) Check CKP Air Gap & Trigger Wheel

    Inspect CKP sensor and trigger wheel for damage or contamination. Repair or replace suspect components. If all components look okay, replace CKP sensor.
  18. 18) Check For CKP+ Short To CKP-; Low Fault

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect CKP sensor. Measure resistance between breakout box test pins J35 (CKP+ I) and J48 (CKP- I). If resistance is less than 3000 ohms, repair CKP+ circuit short to CKP- circuit. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  . If resistance is 3000 ohms or more, replace CKP sensor. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  .
  19. 19) Check Voltage High Or Low

    If voltage in step 6) is less than 1.0 volt (low), go to next step. If voltage in step 6) is 1.0 volt or more (high), go to step 21).
  20. 20) Check For CKP+ Short To Ground; Low Fault

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect ICM from ICM tee. Measure resistance between breakout box test pins J7 (B-) and J35 (CKP+ I). If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, replace ICM. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  . If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair CKP+ circuit short to ground. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  .
  21. 21) Check For CKP+ Short To Power; High Fault

    Leave ICM disconnected from ICM tee. Set DVOM on DC scale. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between breakout box test pins J7 (B-) and J35 (CKP+ I). If voltage is less than 0.5 volt, replace ICM. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  . If voltage is 0.5 volt or more, repair CKP+ circuit short to power. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  .
  22. 22) Check For CKP Circuit Resistance

    Disconnect ICM from ICM tee. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between breakout box test pins J35 (CKP+ I) and J48 (CKP- I). If resistance is 2580-2750 ohms, replace ICM. Clear PCM memory and repeat QUICK TEST  . If resistance is not 2580-2750 ohms, return to step 14).
