Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Gauge & Sender Test
- Using a DVOM, verify battery voltage at load side of fuse No. 18. See Fig 1
. If there is battery voltage at load side of fuse, go to step 3). If voltage is absent, go to next step.
- Using voltmeter, verify voltage at feed side of fuse No. 18. If there is voltage present, replace fuse and retest system. If no voltage is present, repair wiring to fuse panel and retest system. See Fig 1
.
- Partially remove cluster from instrument panel. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER R & I
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using voltmeter, verify battery voltage at cluster connector C2, terminal No. 12 (Red/Yellow wire) and temperature gauge terminal. See Figure
. Inspect cluster for damage. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If voltage is not present, repair circuit No. 640 (Red/Yellow wire) and retest system.
- With ignition switch in OFF position, using ohmmeter, check continuity of cluster and gauge ground circuit at cluster connector C2, terminal No. 13. See Figure
. If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair circuit No. 570 (Black/White wire) and retest system.
- Install Instrument Gauge System Tester (021-00055), or equivalent. Disconnect temperature sending unit at sender. Connect tester to cluster side of connector C1, terminal No. 10 (Red/White wire). Set gauge tester to 74 ohms. If gauge reads "C", go to next step. If gauge does not read "C", go to step 7).
- Set gauge tester to 9.7 ohms. If gauge reads "H", replace temperature sender. If gauge does not read "H", go to next step.
- Using an ohmmeter, check sending unit circuit wiring and instrument cluster printed circuit for shorts or opens by physically flexing the wiring and observing continuity. Continuity reading should not fluctuate. If wiring and flex circuit are okay, replace gauge. See COOLANT TEMPERATURE/OIL PRESSURE GAUGE
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If wiring and flex circuit are faulty, repair wiring or replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER R & I
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
