Reassembly & Adjustments
- When reassembling ring and pinion assembly, pinion depth, pinion bearing preload, side bearing preload and backlash between ring and pinion must be adjusted.
- If only replacing pinion shaft and ring gear, and carrier housing can be reused, compare pinion depth adjustment numbers etched in faces of old and new pinion heads. See Fig 1 .
- Drive pinion end has a plus figure (+), minus figure (-) or a zero figure (0). Figure is determined by manufacturer at time of assembly. Number represents nominal distance that pinion shaft deviates from distance between pinion gear face and center line of axle.
- Nominal distance is measured from center line of ring gear to face of gear on drive pinion shaft. Using PINION DEPTH SHIM ADJUSTMENT CHART, correct shims can be selected for new pinion shaft depth adjustment. See Fig 2 .
- For example, if original drive pinion is etched +4" (+10 mm) and new drive pinion is etched zero (0), then NEW selective oil slinger would be .004" (.10 mm) thicker than original selective oil slinger. See PINION DEPTH SHIM ADJUSTMENT CHART. See Fig 2 .
- Ring gear and pinion gear are supplied in matched sets only. Matching numbers are etched on ring and pinion gears. If using NEW gear set, verify matching gear set numbers. See Fig 1 .
- Pinion depth gauge set allows oil slinger adjustments to be made without having to remove and replace differential bearings when figuring correct pinion depth. See Fig 3 .
NOTE:
To use PINION DEPTH SHIM ADJUSTMENT CHART procedure, old drive pinion oil slinger dimension MUST be determined accurately. If original drive pinion oil slinger dimension cannot be accurately determined, use pinion depth gauge set to determine correct pinion depth setting. Use depth gauge set if using NEW carrier housing.
