Differential Case Reassembly
- Position ring gear to differential case. Install NEW ring gear bolts and tighten to specification in a circular pattern. Place differential case into position in axle housing. Install Master Differential Bearings (T83T-4222-A) on differential case.
- Remove all burrs and nicks from hubs so master bearings rotate freely. Install differential case in housing without shims. Mount dial indicator with indicator tip at 90 degrees to flat surface on head of ring gear bolt or flat machined surface of ring gear.
- Using screwdriver, force differential case toward dial indicator as far as possible. Zero dial indicator with force still applied. Force differential case away from dial indicator as far as possible. Read gauge. Repeat this procedure until same reading is obtained. See Fig 1
.
- This measurement is total differential case end play and will be used later to determine proper shim pack dimension. Use multipurpose grease to lubricate side gears, pinion gears and all thrust washers. Install components in differential case. Rotate side gears until holes in pinion gears and washers line up with holes in case.
- Install differential pinion shaft. Install lock pin. Using a punch and hammer, peen metal of differential case over lock pin at 2 locations, 90 degrees to left and right of lock pin slot. Remove differential case from housing. Leave master bearings on case at this time.
