Pinion Flange & Oil Seal: Installation

  1. Ensure pinion splines are free of burrs. If necessary, remove burrs using fine crocus cloth. Lubricate area between lips of oil seal with grease. Using Oil Seal Installer (T79P-4676-A ), install oil seal.
NOTE: If oil seal becomes cocked during installation, replace oil seal.
  2. Lubricate pinion flange splines with oil. Install pinion flange on pinion with reference marks aligned.
CAUTION: DO NOT  hammer pinion flange or use power tools to install pinion flange.
  3. Install NEW  pinion nut. DO NOT  reuse pinion nut. Hold pinion flange and gradually tighten pinion nut. Rotate pinion while tightening pinion nut to ensure proper seating of bearing.
  4. Using INCH lb. torque wrench, measure pinion bearing preload at different stages when tightening pinion nut. Tighten pinion nut until original pinion bearing preload is obtained.
  5. If original pinion bearing preload is less than 8-14 INCH lbs. (.9-1.6 N.m), tighten pinion nut to obtain correct pinion bearing preload. If original pinion bearing preload is greater than specification, tighten pinion nut to obtain original bearing preload reading.
CAUTION: DO NOT  back off pinion nut to reduce pinion rotating torque. If reduced pinion bearing preload is required, install a NEW  collapsible spacer, and retighten pinion nut to obtain correct bearing preload.
  6. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Apply Loctite to drive shaft flange bolt threads before installing. Ensure reference mark on drive shaft flanges are aligned. Tighten all bolts/nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Fill axle with lubricant. Install and tighten filler plug.
