Reassembly & Adjustments

  1. To reassemble differential case, lubricate all components with rear axle lubricant. Install side gears, pinion gears and thrust washers in differential case.
NOTE: On 3.73:1 and 4.10:1 ratio axles, pinion shaft must be installed in differential case before installing ring gear. On all applications, exciter ring must be replaced if removed from differential case. DO NOT  reuse exciter ring.
  2. Install ring gear and NEW  exciter ring (if removed) on differential case. Ensure reference mark on ring gear aligns with mark on differential case. Tab on exciter ring must align with slot on differential case. See Fig 1 . Start 2 ring gear retaining bolts into differential case.
CAUTION: Ensure tab on exciter ring aligns with slot on differential case.

  3. Mount differential case in press with ring gear facing downward. Press ring gear and exciter ring on differential case. Remove the 2 ring gear retaining bolts.
  4. Apply Loctite to ring gear retaining bolt threads. Install and tighten ring gear retaining bolts to proper specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  5. If replacing front or rear bearing races, install bearing races in differential housing assembly. To ensure bearing races are fully seated, verify that a .0015" (.038 mm) feeler gauge will not fit between bearing race and bottom of bore. Pinion depth, pinion bearing preload, differential bearing preload and ring gear backlash must be checked.
