Pinion Depth

  1. Pinion Depth Gauge Set (T79P-4020-A ) is used for checking pinion depth. Assemble gauge block, gauge disc, aligning adapter and screw. See Fig 1 .
  2. Place rear pinion bearing over aligning adapter and into bearing race of differential housing assembly. See Fig 1 . Install front pinion bearing into front bearing race.
  3. Install handle onto screw and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 N.m). Apply a light film of oil to pinion bearings. Rotate gauge block several times to seat bearings. Rotational torque on gauge block assembly with NEW  bearings should be 40 INCH lbs. (4.5 N.m). Position gauge block at approximately 45-degree angle to axle shaft center line. See Fig 2 .

  4. Thoroughly clean differential case bearing bores. Install gauge tube so it is centered in differential housing assembly. Install bearing caps in original location.
CAUTION: Ensure bearing caps are installed in original location. Arrow or triangle area between bolt holes on bearing cap must point away from ring gear (toward axle shaft end of housing).
  5. Install bearing cap bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Ensure pinion depth gauge set components are properly installed. See Fig 1 .
  6. Hold pinion depth gauge and insert a pinion shim as a gauge for shim selection, between gauge block and gauge tube. Ensure pinion shim is clean and flat.
NOTE: DO NOT  force pinion shim between gauge block and gauge tube. A slight drag should be felt if correct thickness pinion shim is selected.
  7. If pinion has a plus (+) marking on head of pinion, subtract this amount from measured clearance. If pinion has a minus (-) marking, add this amount to measured clearance. Correct pinion shim selection is accomplished when a slight drag is felt as shim is drawn between gauge block and gauge tube. Remove pinion depth gauge set components.
