Description & Operation
Rear axle is a hypoid design ring and pinion gear encased in an integral cast iron differential housing. The hypoid gear set contains a pinion supported by tapered roller bearings. Pinion bearing preload is maintained by a collapsible spacer on the pinion. Semi-floating axle shafts are retained by "C" locks at splined end of axle shafts. On models equipped with Rear Anti-Lock Brake System (RABS), a multi-tooth exciter ring is pressed on differential case behind the ring gear. An electronic speed sensor is retained in a bore on top of differential housing.
