Code 5 - Excessive Dump Solenoid Activity (Aerostar Only)
- If problem occurred with 2WD vehicle, or 4WD vehicle while in 2WD, go to next step. If problem occurred while in 4WD, go to step 3).
- Disconnect control module connector to disable system. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Turn ignition on. Shift transfer case into 4WD mode. Check voltage between ground and terminal No. 5 (Light Blue wire) of control module harness connector. See Figure . If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is greater than one volt, repair or replace 4WD indicator switch (located on transfer case) or repair short in Light Blue wire.
- Place vehicle on hoist. Ensure all wheels are clear off the ground. Operate vehicle at 5 MPH. Check voltage between terminals No. 3 (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 10 (Red/Pink wire) of control module harness connector. If voltage is greater than 650 mV, reconnect control module connector and go to CODE 5 under TEST DRIVE . If voltage is less than 650 mV or is erratic, complete steps 2) through 8) of CODE 6 and then go to next step to verify.
- Ensure all preceding diagnostic steps have been completed and that affected wiring integrity has been verified. If steps have not been completed, go to last diagnostic step completed and continue from there. If all diagnostic steps have been completed, replace control module and go to next step. If control module has already been replaced with no resolution of problem, replace valve assembly and go to next step.
- Ensure ignition is off. Reconnect negative battery cable. Ensure all connectors are connected and secured. Retrieve trouble codes. See RETRIEVING TROUBLE CODES . If Code 16 is present, go to CODE 16 under TEST DRIVE . If Code 5 is present, go to next step. If any other trouble code is present, go to corresponding test for appropriate trouble code.
- Ensure all preceding diagnostic steps have been completed and that involved wiring integrity has been verified. If steps have not been completed, go to last diagnostic step completed and continue from there. If all diagnostic steps have been completed, go to next step.
- If previous diagnostic steps have been completed, problem is most likely wiring related. Go to INTERMITTENT DIAGNOSIS and perform tests on all involved circuits. If problem is not resolved, go to step 4). If problem is resolved, repair is complete. Go to CODE 16 under TEST DRIVE .
