Diagnosis & Testing: Self-Diagnostics

The system readiness indicator light (AIR BAG warning light) is used in diagnosing malfunctions or faults in air bag system. A fault code will be displayed when ignition switch is in RUN position and diagnostic monitor detects a system fault. Certain faults may not be displayed until approximately 30 seconds after ignition switch has been turned to RUN position. This is amount of time required for diagnostic monitor to test and verify all system faults.

AIR BAG warning light flashes a series of 2-digit fault codes. For example, a fault Code 32 would be displayed in following manner: flash flash flash, one-second pause, flash flash, 3-second pause, and then cycle would repeat.

The coded fault feature is prioritized so that if 2 or more different fault codes occur at same time, highest priority fault indication will be shown until corrected, using appropriate diagnostic test procedure. Identify fault code. See FAULT CODE IDENTIFICATION  table. Perform appropriate diagnostic test. See DIAGNOSTIC TESTS  . Once higher priority fault has been corrected, check AIR BAG warning light to see if another fault exists. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  .

If a system fault exists and AIR BAG warning light is malfunctioning, a series of 5 sets of 5 beeps will be heard, indicating service is needed. number of beeps does not indicate a fault code. See TEST A under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS  . When fault has been corrected, fault code will be automatically removed from air bag indicator.
