Code 11 - Brakelight Switch Always Closed Or Circuit Worn/Damaged

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect diagnostic connector (Black/Orange wire) from its mating half (Red wire). Reconnect diagnostic connector. Turn ignition on. If Yellow RABS warning light illuminates, go to next step. If warning light does not illuminate, go to INTERMITTENT DIAGNOSIS  for all affected circuits.
  2. Turn ignition off. Depress brake pedal and release while observing brakelights. If brakelights are on when pedal is depressed and off when pedal is released, go to step 5). If brakelights do not come on, go to next step. If brakelights are always on, replace brakelight switch and go to step 7).
  3. Inspect brakelight bulbs. Code 11 only sets when both bulbs are burned-out. If both brakelight bulbs are not burned-out, go to next step. If bulbs are burned-out, replace bulbs and go to step 7).
  4. Remove and inspect brakelight fuse. If fuse is blown, replace fuse and correct reason for blown fuse. After repairs, go to step 7). If fuse is not blown, repair open in brakelight circuit Light Green wire or repair or replace brakelight switch. After repairs, go to step 7).
  5. Depress brake pedal. Check voltage between terminal No. 11 (Light Green wire) of control module harness connector and chassis ground. If voltage reading is greater than 9 volts, reconnect all connectors. If voltage reading is 9 volts or less, repair open circuit in Light Green wire between control module and brakelight switch. After repairs, go to step 7).
  6. Ensure all preceding diagnostic steps have been completed and that involved wiring integrity has been verified. If steps have not been completed, go to last diagnostic step completed and continue from there. If all diagnostic steps have been completed, replace control module and go to next step. If control module has already been replaced with no resolution of problem, replace brakelight switch and go to next step.
  7. Ensure ignition is off. Reconnect negative battery cable. Ensure all connectors are connected and secure. Retrieve trouble codes. See RETRIEVING TROUBLE CODES  . If Code 16 is present, go to CODE 16 under TEST DRIVE  . If Code 11 is present, go to next step. If any other trouble code is present, go to corresponding test for appropriate trouble code.
  8. Ensure all preceding diagnostic steps have been completed and that involved wiring integrity has been verified. If steps have not been completed, go to last diagnostic step completed and continue from there. If all diagnostic steps have been completed, go to CODE 6 under TEST DRIVE  .
