Pinpoint Test L - Speedometer Indicates Zero Mph At All Speeds When Vehicle Is In Motion

  1. Turn ignition switch from OFF to RUN position. Check ignition cluster prove-out mode. If prove-out mode is normal, go to next step. If prove-out mode is not normal, replace instrument cluster.
  2. Drive vehicle. If odometer advances, replace instrument cluster, then retest system. If odometer does not advance, go to next step.
  3. Drive car at speed faster than 30 MPH. Check for proper operation of cruise control. If cruise control operates correctly, go to next step. If speed control does not operate correctly, go to step 8).
  4. Unplug connector from Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), located at left rear of transmission. Measure resistance between wiring harness connector terminals. If resistance is 500 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 500 ohms, repair short in circuit No. 150 (Dark Green/White wire).
  5. Measure resistance between VSS sensor terminals. If resistance is 200-230, go to next step. If resistance is not 200-230 ohms, replace vehicle speed sensor.
  6. Remove VSS from transaxle. Inspect sensor gear teeth and retainer clip. Repair or replace if necessary. If sensor components are in good condition, go to next step.
  7. Inspect drive gear on output shaft. Repair or replace if necessary. If drive gear is in good condition, go to next step.
  8. Reconnect VSS. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Unplug C1, connector from instrument cluster. Measure resistance between connector C1, pin No. 8 (Black/White wire) and pin No. 12 (Dark Green/White wire). See Figure . If resistance is 160-230 ohms, replace instrument cluster. If resistance is not 160-230 ohms, repair circuit No. 150 (Dark Green/White wire).
