Pinpoint Test A - Display Not Lit, Too Dim, Or Blank

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Turn headlights off. If display is not illuminated, go to next step. If display is illuminated, go to step 8).
  2. Leave ignition switch in RUN position. Press any button on cluster control. If button does not beep, go to next step. If button beeps, go to step 7).
  3. Inspect fuses No. 19 (10-amp), 21 (10-amp) and 30 (25-amp). If fuses are blown, go to next step. If fuses are okay, go to step 5).
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Connect voltmeter between ground and power side of fuse. If short circuit is indicated, repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, go to step 9).
  5. Reconnect negative battery cable. Connect voltmeter between ground and power side of fuse. If voltage is less than 9 volts, repair open in fuse holder. If voltage is 9 volts or more, go to next step.
  6. Ensure ignition is off. Remove instrument cluster. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  . Turn ignition to RUN position. Ensure voltage is present between ground and the following terminals. See Figure .
    • Connector C1, pin No. 7 (Black/Light Green wire).
    • Connector C1, pin No. 9 (Pink/Black wire).

    Turn ignition off. Ensure continuity is present between ground and the following terminal:

    • Connector C1, pin No. 8 (Black/White wire).

    If voltage and continuity are not as specified, repair circuit as necessary. If voltage and continuity are as specified, go to step 10).

  7. Inspect connector C1, pin terminals. If connector and/or terminals are damaged, repair as necessary. If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  8. Ensure headlights are off. With ignition switch in RUN position and instrument cluster removed, measure voltage between ground and connector C1, pin No. 13 (Light Green wire). If voltage is less than 3 volts, replace instrument cluster. If voltage is 3 volts or more, repair or replace rheostat.
  9. Ensure ignition is off. Check for continuity present between connector C1, pin No. 8 (Black/White wire) and the following terminals:
    • Connector C1, pin No. 7 (Black/Light Green wire).
    • Connector C1, pin No. 9 (Pink/Black wire).

      If continuity is present, replace instrument cluster. If continuity is not present, go to next step.

  10. Inspect instrument cluster connectors and terminals. If connectors and/or terminals are damaged, repair as necessary. If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  11. Ensure ignition is off. Remove negative battery cable. Inspect connector C1, pins No. 9 (Pink/Black wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Orange wire). If terminal(s) are damaged or corroded, replace instrument cluster. If terminals are okay, go to next step.
  12. Ensure ignition is off. Inspect instrument cluster connection to circuit board. If connection is not clean and tight, repair as necessary. If connection is clean and tight, replace instrument cluster.
