Speedometer/Odometer Test
- Ensure quick connect is properly attached at speedometer head. Ensure cable is connected at vehicle speed sensor. If speedometer noise is the complaint, go to next step. If noise is not the complaint, go to step 3).
- With engine running, transaxle in Neutral, check for noise. If noise is present, check for other causes of vehicle noise. If noise is not present, go to step 7).
- Check speedometer operation. If speedometer pointer jumps or wavers, go to step 7). If pointer does not jump or waver, go to next step.
- Check speedometer pointer operation. If pointer operates, go to step 11). If pointer does not operate, go to next step.
- Check odometer operation. If odometer functions, go to step 12). If odometer does not operate, go to next step.
- If speedometer/odometer gives accurate indication of speed and distance, system is operational. If accurate indication of speed and distance are not registered, go to step 19).
- Check cruise control cable and vehicle speed sensor cable for kinks or bends. If cables are okay, go to next step. If kinks are severe, replace cables as necessary. For minor bends, adjust cable routing to obtain generous curves and recheck.
- Disconnect cruise control and vehicle speed sensor cables and check cable core for kinks, burrs or bent tips. If cable(s) is okay, go to next step. If damaged, replace as necessary.
- Remove vehicle speed sensor and check for erratic or noisy operation. If sensor is okay, go to next step. If erratic or noisy, replace sensor.
- Check for damaged driven gear. If gear is okay, replace speedometer head. If gear is bad, replace gear.
- Ensure odometer is operating properly. If odometer is operating properly, replace speedometer head. If odometer is not operating properly, go to step 13).
- If pointer operates properly, replace speedometer head. If pointer does not operate properly, go to next step.
- Check and verify cruise control and vehicle speed sensor cables are properly connected to speedometer and vehicle speed sensor. If cables are properly connected, go to next step. If cables are not properly connected, service connections as necessary.
- Disconnect cruise control and speed sensor cables. Ensure magnet shaft in speedometer head turns freely. If magnet shaft turns freely, go to next step. If shaft does not turn freely, replace speedometer head.
- Check drive and driven gear for damage or wear. If both gears are okay, go to next step. If damaged or worn, replace as necessary.
- Check cruise control and speed sensor cables for kinks or improper routing. If cables are okay, go to next step. If cables are not okay, replace as necessary.
- Disconnect cruise control cable and speed sensor cable from vehicle speed sensor. Remove vehicle speed sensor and ensure shaft in speed sensor turns freely. If shaft turns freely, go to next step. If shaft does not turn freely, replace vehicle speed sensor.
- Check for broken cable cores. If core is broken or seized, replace cable as a complete unit.
- Check accuracy of odometer over a measured distance. If odometer is accurate, replace speedometer head. If odometer is not accurate, go to next step.
- Check for proper driven gear. If driven gear is correct, go to next step. If gear is incorrect, replace gear.
- Check for correct drive gear, transaxle and tires. If all components are correct, replace speedometer. If any component is incorrect, replace as necessary.
