Fuel Gauge & Sending Unit Test

NOTE: On vehicles with tachometer installed, fuel gauge is part of fuel/temperature gauge assembly. Neither of these gauges is serviceable separately. If either gauge malfunctions, assembly must be replaced.
  1. Turn ignition to OFF position. Disconnect rear fuel pump module electrical pigtail from main wiring harness connector. Short Yellow/White and Orange/Yellow wire to ground. (Power to instrument cluster must be cycled or fuel gauge may take up to 1/2 hour to move). Turn ignition to RUN. If fuel gauge reads "E" (empty) or below, go to step 4). If fuel gauge reads higher than "E", go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position. Reconnect fuel pump module. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between instrument cluster connector C2, terminals No. 12 and 13. See Figure -5. If resistance is between 15-160 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 160 ohms, repair open in Black/White wire between main wiring harness connector and instrument cluster.
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C2. Check continuity of printed circuit between terminals No. 10 (hot in RUN or START), No. 12 (reference ground) and 13 (fuel level input). If there is continuity for each circuit of printed circuit, replace fuel gauge and fuel indicator module (slosh module) in instrument cluster. If there is no continuity, replace printed circuit.
  4. Turn ignition to OFF position. Disconnect fuel pump module electrical pigtail connector from main wiring harness. Turn ignition to RUN position. If fuel gauge reads "F" (full), go to step 6). If fuel gauge reads less than full, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect cluster connector C2, terminal No. 13 to ground with a 145-ohm resistance jumper. Connect instrument cluster connector C2. See Figure -5. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition to RUN. If gauge reads full, replace fuel gauge and fuel indicator module (slosh module) in instrument cluster. If there is no continuity, go to next step.
  6. Remove fuel tank from vehicle. See FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove fuel pump from tank. Inspect fuel tank for damage. If fuel tank is damaged, replace fuel tank. If fuel tank is okay, go to next step.
  7. Inspect fuel pump module, float and float rod for damage. If fuel gauge sending unit, float and float rod are damaged, replace as necessary. If okay, go to next step.
  8. Check resistance of Yellow/White wire between fuel pump module connector and pigtail connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Yellow/White wire.
  9. Check resistance of Black wire between fuel pump module connector and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace fuel pump module. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire.
