Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Gauge & Sender Test

NOTE: On instrument panels with tachometer installed, temperature gauge is part of fuel/temperature gauge assembly. Neither of these gauges is serviceable separately. If either gauge malfunctions, assembly must be replaced.
  1. With ignition in the OFF position, disconnect temperature sending unit connector. Connect Instrument Gauge System Tester (014-R1063) or equivalent to engine coolant temperature sensor connector. Set tester to 74 ohms, turn ignition switch to RUN and wait 60 seconds to read gauge. If gauge reads "C", go to next step. If gauge does not read "C", go to step 3).
  2. Set tester to 10 ohms, wait 60 seconds and read gauge. If gauge reads "H", replace coolant temperature sender unit. If gauge does not read "H", go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove instrument panel. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C2. See Fig 1 -5. Measure resistance between engine coolant temperature gauge sender connector and instrument cluster connector C2, terminal No. 14 (Red/White wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Red/White wire.
  4. Check continuity between printed circuit and connector C2, terminals No. 10, 12 and 14. If there is no continuity, replace temperature gauge. If there is continuity, printed circuit is okay. See Fig 1 -5.
