Pinpoint Test T - Instantaneous Or Average Fuel Economy Always Indicates 0 Miles/Gal Or 99 Miles/Gal

  1. If message center displays 0 MPG (99L/100 KM), go to next step. If message center displays 99 MPG (0L/100 KM), go to step 3).
  2. Drive vehicle. If speedometer works properly, temporarily substitute known good EIC, then retest system. If speedometer does not operate properly, go to PINPOINT TEST K.
  3. Drive vehicle with O/D OFF selected. If O/D OFF indicator does not flash, go to step 4). If O/D OFF indicator flashes, refer to TESTS W/CODES - EEC-V (4.6L) article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
  4. Inspect Dark Blue/Light Green wire between pin No. 43 of PCM and EIC connector C1 pin No. 11 for shorts or open circuits. See Figure. If wire is okay, go to next step. Repair wire as necessary.
  5. Turn ignition off. Press and hold E/M and left arrow of SELECT button simultaneously. While pressing buttons, start engine. Release buttons when cluster lights. Allow engine to idle during remainder of test. If odometer does not flash, go to next step. If odometer flashes, temporarily substitute known good EIC, then retest system.
  6. Press right arrow of SELECT button once. Observe display. If display is the same as it was in step 1), go to next step. If display is not the same as it was in step 1), repeat step 5).
  7. Press E/M and left arrow of SELECT button simultaneously once. Observe odometer. If left 2 characters are OA, go to next step. If left 2 characters are anything else, repeat step 5).
  8. Press right arrow of SELECT button twice, quickly. Left 2 characters of odometer will change to 1b. Repeat this step 4 times until left 2 characters are 5f. Observe right 4 characters of odometer. This display is pulse frequency from fuel flow meter, and should change with engine speed. 0000 indicates no fuel flow pulses are being received from PCM. If 0000 appears, turn engine off. Repeat step 3). If Dark Blue/Light Green wire is okay, temporarily substitute known good PCM, then retest system. If any number but 0000 appears, temporarily substitute known good EIC, then retest system.
