Pinpoint Test C - Display Does Not Respond To Buttons - No Beep Sound When Buttons Pressed, No Driver Alert Sounds

  1. Turn ignition on. Check for seat belt unfastened and key warning chimes. If seat belt warning chime sounds, go to step 4). If seat belt chime does not sound, repair seat belt chime circuit.
  2. Check E/M button operation. If display is not stuck in Metric mode, go to next step. If display is stuck in Metric mode, go to step 12).
  3. Check E/M button operation. If display is not stuck in English mode, go to next step. If display is stuck in English mode, go to step 10).
  4. Remove finish panel to expose instrument cluster. Inspect all wiring connections for secure attachment to instrument cluster. If connections are okay, go to next step. Secure wiring and connections if loose.
  5. Unplug connector from message center switch module. Measure resistance between pin No. 5 (Light Blue/Yellow wire) and pin No. 4 (Pink/Orange wire) of message center switch module, with no button pressed. If resistance is 17,300-17,600 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 17,300-17,600 ohms, replace message center switch module.
  6. Measure resistance between pin No. 6 (Light Blue/White wire) and pin No. 4 (Pink/Orange wire) of message center switch module, with no button pressed. If resistance is 17,300-17,600 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 17,300-17,600 ohms, replace message center switch module.
  7. Measure resistance between specified switch module terminals while pressing each button in turn. See MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH MODULE RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS  table. If resistances are within specification, go to next step. If resistances are not within specification, replace message center switch module.
    MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH MODULE RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS

    2-8 E/M 5100-5200
    1-8 RESET 5100-5200
    1-8 SELECT (Forward) 2250-2350
    2-8 SELECT (Reverse) 2250-2350
  8. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster. See ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (EIC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  9. Inspect Light Blue/Yellow wire for continuity between pin No. 5 of message center switch module and EIC connector C1 pin No. 3. See Figure. Inspect Light Blue/White wire for continuity between pin No. 6 of message center switch module and EIC connector C2 pin No. 23. Inspect Pink/Orange for continuity between pin No. 4 of message center switch module and ground. I continuity exists, temporarily substitute known good EIC, then retest system. If continuity does not exist, repair appropriate wiring between instrument cluster and switch module.
  10. Turn ignition on. Unplug connector from Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC). Press E/M button so EIC is in English mode. Measure voltage at terminal No. 20 (Red wire) on EATC harness connector. If not 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, repair EATC system.
  11. Unplug connector C2 from EIC. Measure voltage at EIC connector C2 pin No. 32 (not harness connector). If voltage is approximately 5 volts, repair Red wire between EIC and EATC. If voltage is not as specified, temporarily substitute known good EIC, then retest system.
  12. Turn ignition on. Unplug connector from Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC) panel. Press E/M button so EIC is in Metric mode. Measure voltage at terminal No. 20 (Red wire) on EATC harness connector. If voltage is not 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, repair EATC system.
  13. Unplug connector C2 from EIC. Measure voltage at EIC connector C2 pin No. 32 (not harness connector). If voltage is approximately 5 volts, repair Red wire between EIC and EATC. If voltage is not as specified, temporarily substitute known good EIC, then retest system.
