Removal (With Air Bag)
- Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Turn lock cylinder to LOCK position. Rotate steering wheel counterclockwise, approximately 16 degrees, until locked.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM
. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD
. Remove upper and lower shrouds.
- Disconnect contact assembly (clockspring) electrical connector at column harness. Tape contact assembly rotor to prevent rotation. See Figure
. Remove contact assembly from upper bearing retainer plate. Remove upper bearing retainer plate and upper bearing retaining ring. Using 2 screwdrivers, pry upper bearing from steering shaft.
