Removal & Installation (Tempo & Topaz 3.0L)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Prop clutch pedal to keep clutch pedal from moving toward floor when clutch cable is disconnected. Disconnect MAF sensor and intake temperature sensor connectors from air cleaner. Remove air cleaner assembly.
- Remove 2 bolts holding coil bracket assembly to left rear of cylinder head and position coil bracket aside. Install engine lifting brackets on rear of left cylinder head. Disconnect back-up light switch. Disconnect clutch cable from clutch release lever.
- Remove starter cable bracket. Remove 2 transaxle mount-to-engine bolts. Remove power steering line bracket-to-engine nuts. Remove top 4 transaxle-to-engine bolts. Disconnect speed sensor connector. Remove speedometer cables from speed sensor. DO NOT
remove clip holding cable to speed sensor. Install engine support.CAUTION: DO NOT loosen any engine mount bolts other than those specified, or damage to engine may occur due to excessive movement.
- Loosen 2 T-50 Torx bolts attaching right engine mounts to right frame rail. Ensure steering column is in unlocked position. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove and discard both lower ball joint pinch bolts. Slightly spread pinch joint and separate ball joint from steering knuckle. Use punch to remove bolts, if necessary. DO NOT damage ball joint seals.
- Remove cotter pin and retaining nuts from tie rod end. Using Half-Shaft Remover (D83P-4026-A), pry left axle shaft from transaxle. Install Transaxle Plugs (T81P-1177-B) to prevent fluid loss. Remove both half-shafts. Remove bolt attaching shift lever linkage to transaxle shift rod and position linkage aside. Remove stabilizer rod-to-transaxle bolt and position stabilizer rod aside.
- Disconnect neutral sensing switch connector. Remove starter cable bracket. Remove starter motor. Loosen 2 front engine-to-transaxle support bracket bolts. Remove 2 rear engine-to-transaxle bracket bolts. Remove 2 bracket-to-transaxle bolts.
- Using T-50 Torx bit, remove accessory drive belt tensioner. Install Damper Tool (T93P-6316-A). Loosen, but DO NOT
remove, 2 right engine mount retaining nuts. Remove lower bolt from left front transaxle mount. Loosen through-bolt and pivot transaxle mount aside. Remove nuts from rear transaxle mount.CAUTION: DO NOT allow weight of engine to rest on crankshaft damper. Damage to crankshaft damper and crankshaft thrust bearings may occur.
- Using engine support fixture, lower engine and transaxle assembly until crankshaft damper just contacts right frame rail. Secure transaxle jack under transaxle and install safety chains. Lower transaxle and remove 2 transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove transaxle from vehicle.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Install NEW circlips on ends of axle shafts and NEW nut and bolt when attaching lower control arm ball joint to steering knuckle.
