Removal & Installation (Continental, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Mark VII, Mark VIII, Sable, Taurus & Town Car)

On models with air bags, disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD . Remove contact assembly. Remove steering column. See STEERING COLUMN R & I .
Remove "U" joint, lower coil spring, sensor ring and lower tolerance ring from lower end of steering shaft. See Figure and Figure . Remove slip ring brush assembly. Note installation position of turn-signal cancel cam and remove from steering shaft.
CAUTION: Lock cylinder housing is under spring pressure. Hold lock cylinder housing stationary while removing tilt pivot bolts to prevent rapid expansion of tilt position spring.
Remove ignition switch. Remove upper snap ring and upper coil spring. Remove upper tolerance ring. Remove 2 tilt pivot bolts. Remove lock cylinder housing from lock actuator housing.
To remove upper or middle bearing, support lock cylinder housing and tap out bearing with punch and plastic hammer. To install, reverse removal procedure.
