Inaccurate Fuel Indication, Full Not Displayed When Tank Is Full, Empty Not Displayed When Tank Is Empty

Disconnect battery ground cable. Lower fuel tank to access fuel sender connector. Connect 43-ohm resistor to harness connector in place of fuel sender. Reconnect battery. Set ignition switch to RUN position. Fuel gauge should display 2 or 3 bars. Fuel remaining should indicate 3-4 gallons. If gauge does not indicate properly, go to next step. If gauge indicates properly, go to step 3).
Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove cluster. Secure connectors to prevent shorting. With 43-ohm resistor in place of fuel sender, measure resistance between cluster connector "A" terminals No. 6 (Yellow/White wire) and 8 (Orange/Yellow wire). See Figure . If resistance is 42-45 ohms, replace cluster. If resistance is not 42-45 ohms, repair circuit No. 29 (Yellow/White wire) as required.
Disconnect battery ground cable. Check fuel sender for binding, sticking, misalignment, etc. If sender is okay, go to next step. If sender is not okay, service as necessary.
Check fuel tank for dents, bulges and other damage. Check for proper installation of fuel filler tube. If tank and tube are okay, fault is caused by other vehicle systems. If tank and/or tube are not okay, repair as necessary.
