Timing Belt: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove crankshaft pulley and sprocket baffle plate located behind crankshaft pulley. Note direction of sprocket baffle plate installation.
  2. Support engine. Remove retaining nuts and dowels from right engine mount. Remove engine mount. Remove retaining bolts. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers, and gaskets.
  3. Rotate crankshaft so timing mark (No. 1) on camshaft sprocket aligns with timing mark on cylinder head, and timing mark on crankshaft sprocket aligns with timing mark on oil pump housing. See Figure.
    CAUTION: If reusing timing belt, mark direction of belt rotation.
  4. Mark direction of timing belt rotation if belt is to be reused. Remove spring from belt tensioner. Remove retaining bolt and belt tensioner. Remove timing belt.
  5. If removing camshaft sprocket, hold sprocket by inserting screwdriver through sprocket hole. Remove retaining bolt, and remove camshaft sprocket.
  6. If removing crankshaft sprocket, hold flywheel with Holder (T84P-6375-A) for A/T models; on M/T models, place transaxle in 4th gear. Remove retaining bolt. Remove crankshaft sprocket.
