Fitting Pistons

  1. To determine if piston-to-cylinder clearance is within specification, piston skirt diameter is measured at center line of piston at 90 degree angle to piston pin.
  2. Standard size pistons are color coded Red, Blue or Yellow on the piston dome. If piston-to-bore clearance is in lower one-third of specified clearance, use a Red piston. If clearance is in middle of specified clearance, use Blue piston. The Yellow piston is .004" (.10 mm) oversize.
  3. Use proper piston to obtain the specified clearance. See PISTONS PINS & RINGS SPECIFICATIONS  table in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
