Removal (Mustang)

  1. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD  . Remove upper and lower shrouds. See Figure .
    CAUTION: Before removing contact assembly (clockspring), see CONTACT ASSEMBLY (CLOCKSPRING)  under SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.
  2. Remove contact assembly (clockspring). Remove bearing retainer plate. Remove 2 nuts retaining steering shaft flexible coupling to flange on steering input shaft. Remove upper bearing snap ring from steering shaft.
  3. Pull outward on steering shaft. Shaft will move approximately 1/4" (6.35 mm). Using 2 screwdrivers in casting relief areas, pry bearing off steering shaft.
