All models are equipped with a driver-side air bag and have the option of being equipped with a passenger-side air bag. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is designed to provide increased accident protection for driver and passenger by deploying air bags in a front-end collision. The air bag, stored in the steering wheel module and in the instrument panel above the glove compartment, deploys in approximately 40 milliseconds after the front impact sensors close. The SRS is designed to be used with the 3-point safety belts.

During a front-end collision, the front impact sensor(s) internal balls are thrown forward. The balls complete an electrical circuit and ignite the inflator to deploy air bag. At least 2 sensors, one rear safing impact sensor and one front impact sensor, must activate simultaneously to inflate air bag.

The SRS includes the following components: diagnostic monitor, driver-side air bag module, passenger-side air bag module (if dual system), SRS readiness light (AIR BAG warning light), front impact and rear safing impact sensors, ignitor assemblies (in air bag modules), clockspring, and associated wiring harnesses.
