Circuit Test D - Code 13, Front Impact Sensor Or Air Bag CKT Shorted To Ground
CAUTION:
DO NOT replace diagnostic monitor with a Code 13 present unless instructed to do so.
NOTE:
Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
. After repairs are performed, recheck AIR BAG warning light for other fault codes. See TESTING - SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK
.
- INITIAL TEST PROCEDURE - Deactivate SRS. See COMPLETE SYSTEM DEACTIVATION under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Check AIR BAG warning light for codes. See TESTING - SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If AIR BAG warning light does not indicate Code 13, go to step 2). If AIR BAG warning light indicates Code 13, go to step 3).
- CHECK AIR BAG(S) - Check air bag(s) and mating wiring harness connectors for pinched or damaged wiring. Repair or replace wiring as necessary. When repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light for codes with Air Bag Simulator(s) (105-00008) still in place of air bag module(s). See TESTING - SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If Code 51 exists, replace diagnostic monitor. When repairs are complete, check for air bag codes again. If system checks okay, reactivate SRS. If Code 51 does not exist and system is okay, reactivate SRS. If wiring is okay, replace clockspring. When repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light for codes with Air Bag Simulator(s) (105-00008) still in place of air bag module(s). See TESTING - SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If system checks okay, reactivate SRS.
- INSTALL AIR BAG SIMULATOR AT BASE OF STEERING COLUMN - If Code 13 exists in step 1), remove Air Bag Simulator (105-00008) from wiring harness side of driver's air bag module connector. Disconnect Gray connector (circuits No. 614 and 615) at base of steering column. Install air bag simulator to Gray connector (wiring harness side) at base of steering column. Check AIR BAG warning light for codes. See TESTING - SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If AIR BAG warning light indicates Code 13, go to step 4). If AIR BAG warning light does not indicate Code 13, replace clockspring. When repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light for codes with Air Bag Simulator(s) (105-00008) still in place of air bag module(s). If Code 51 does not exist and system is okay, reactivate SRS. If Code 51 exists, replace diagnostic monitor. When repairs are complete, check for air bag codes again. If system checks okay, reactivate SRS.
- REMOVE AIR BAG SIMULATOR AT BASE OF STEERING COLUMN - Remove Air Bag Simulator (105-00008) from Gray connector at base of steering column. Remove air bag simulator from wiring harness side of passenger-side air bag module connector (if equipped). Check AIR BAG warning light for codes. See TESTING - SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If Code 13 exists, go to step 9). If Code 13 does not exist, go to step 5).
- CHECK FOR SHORT TO GROUND IN CIRCUITS NO. 615 (GRAY/WHITE WIRE) & 616 (PINK/BLACK WIRE) - Disconnect diagnostic monitor connectors. See Figure . Remove Red locking wedge from diagnostic monitor Black connector. Check resistance between terminals No. 10 (Gray/White wire), 9 (Pink/Black wire) of diagnostic monitor Black connector and ground. See Figure . If resistance in both circuits is less more than 10 ohms, go to step 6). If resistance is less than 10 ohms in either circuit, locate and repair short to ground in circuits No. 615 (Gray/White wire) and/or 616 (Pink/Black wire). Reinstall air bag simulator(s) and check AIR BAG warning light for codes. See TESTING - SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If Code 51 exists, replace diagnostic monitor. If Code 51 does not exist and system is okay, reactivate system. When repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light for codes again. If system checks okay, reactivate SRS.
- CHECK FRONT IMPACT SENSOR CIRCUITS - Check resistance between terminal No. 17 (Pink/Orange wire) of diagnostic monitor Gray connector and ground and between terminal No. 19 (White/Yellow wire) of diagnostic monitor Black connector and ground. If resistance in either circuit is less than 750 ohms, go to step 7). If resistance in both circuits is more than 750 ohms, replace diagnostic monitor. Reconnect all disconnected SRS connectors. When repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light for codes. See TESTING - SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If system checks okay, reactivate SRS.
- VERIFY SHORT TO GROUND IN FRONT IMPACT SENSORS - Disconnect sensor in circuit that had less than 750 ohms in step 6). Check resistance across sensor terminals. If resistance is more than 750 ohms, go to step 8). If resistance is less than 750 ohms, replace sensor. When repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light for codes with Air Bag Simulator(s) (105-00008) still in place of air bag module(s). If Code 51 does not exist and system is okay, reactivate SRS. If Code 51 exists, replace diagnostic monitor. When repairs are complete, check for air bag codes again. If system checks okay, reactivate SRS.
- VERIFY SHORT TO GROUND IN WIRING HARNESS - With front impact sensors disconnected, recheck resistance between circuit(s) that had less than 750 ohms in step 6). If resistance is less than 750 ohms, locate and repair short to ground in circuits No. 617 (Pink/Orange wire) between diagnostic monitor connector and right front impact sensor and/or no 621 (White Yellow wire) between diagnostic monitor connector and left front impact sensor. When repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light for codes with Air Bag Simulator(s) (105-00008) still in place of air bag module(s). If Code 51 does not exist and system is okay, reactivate SRS. If Code 51 exists, replace diagnostic monitor. When repairs are complete, check for air bag codes again. If system checks okay, reactivate SRS. If resistance is more than 750 ohms, check for crossed wires at front impact sensor connector(s) and at diagnostic monitor connectors. Repair wiring as necessary. When repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light for codes with Air Bag Simulator(s) (105-00008) still in place of air bag module(s). If Code 51 does not exist and system is okay, reactivate SRS. If Code 51 exists, replace diagnostic monitor. When repairs are complete, check for air bag codes again. If system checks okay, reactivate SRS.
- CHECK REAR SAFING IMPACT SENSOR CIRCUIT - If Code 13 exists in step 4), disconnect rear safing impact sensor connector. See Figure . Check AIR BAG warning light for codes. See TESTING - SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If AIR BAG warning light does not indicate Code 13, go to step 10). If AIR BAG warning light indicates Code 13, locate and repair short to ground in circuit No. 614 (Gray/Orange wire). When repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light for codes with Air Bag Simulator(s) (105-00008) still in place of air bag module(s). If Code 51 does not exist and system is okay, reactivate SRS. If Code 51 exists, replace diagnostic monitor. When repairs are complete, check for air bag codes again. If system checks okay, reactivate SRS.
- VERIFY SHORT TO GROUND IN REAR SAFING IMPACT SENSOR - Check resistance between circuit No. 614 (Gray/Orange wire) and ground. See Figure . If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to step 11). If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace rear safing impact sensor. When repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light for codes with Air Bag Simulator(s) (105-00008) still in place of air bag module(s). If Code 51 does not exist and system is okay, reactivate SRS. If Code 51 exists, replace diagnostic monitor. When repairs are complete, check for air bag codes again. If system checks okay, reactivate SRS.
- VERIFY SHORT TO GROUND IN WIRING HARNESS - Disconnect diagnostic monitor connectors. See Figure . Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 12 (Purple/White wire) of diagnostic monitor Black connector and ground. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, locate and repair short to ground in circuit No. 623 (Purple/White wire) Reconnect diagnostic monitor connectors. When repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light for codes with Air Bag Simulator(s) (105-00008) still in place of air bag module(s). See TESTING - SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If Code 51 does not exist and system checks okay, reactivate SRS. If Code 51 exists, replace diagnostic monitor. When repairs are complete, check for air bag codes again. If system checks okay, reactivate SRS. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, check for crossed wires at rear safing impact sensor and/or diagnostic monitor connectors. Repair wiring as necessary. When repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light for codes with Air Bag Simulator(s) (105-00008) still in place of air bag module(s). See TESTING - SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If Code 51 does not exist and system checks okay, reactivate SRS. If Code 51 exists, replace diagnostic monitor. When repairs are complete, check for air bag codes again. If system checks okay, reactivate SRS.
