Removal (M/T Models)

  1. Release fuel pressure and disconnect fuel lines. See, in this article, FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE & FUEL LINE CONNECTIONS . Remove hood. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Remove battery and battery tray. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect necessary electrical connections, coolant hoses and vacuum hoses.
  3. Remove air by-pass valve from throttle body. Disconnect ground strap from left side of cylinder head. Disconnect control cables at throttle body. Remove accelerator cable bracket from intake manifold.
  4. Discharge A/C system. Disconnect A/C line at accumulator. Plug line openings to prevent contamination. Remove accessory drive belt, automatic tensioner and idler pulley.
  5. Disconnect power steering pump return hose from reservoir. Disconnect pressure hose from power steering pump. Disconnect power steering hose retaining bracket from alternator bracket. Position hoses out of the way.
  6. Raise and support vehicle. Remove lower splash shields and fan shroud assembly. Remove A/C compressor with hoses attached and secure aside.
  7. Disconnect exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold. Remove front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter. Disconnect wiring at starter motor.
  8. Disconnect shift control rod and extension bar from transaxle. Remove crankshaft damper. Remove front wheels. Remove staked area from axle shaft nut.
  9. Remove axle shaft nut. Remove retaining nut and separate tie rod ends from steering knuckle. Remove lower ball joint-to-steering knuckle clamp bolt.
  10. Separate lower ball joint from steering knuckle. Pull steering knuckle assembly outward and disengage axle shaft from steering knuckle.
    NOTE: Crossmember must be removed so left axle shaft can be disengaged from transaxle.
  11. Support transaxle with jack. Remove transaxle-to-crossmember retaining nut. Remove retaining nuts at rear of crossmember. Support crossmember and remove remaining crossmember retaining bolts. Remove crossmember.
  12. Place drain pan under transaxle. Place pry bar between axle shaft and transaxle case. Pry axle shaft from transaxle. Use care not to damage oil seal or transaxle case. Remove both axle shafts.
    CAUTION: Install suitable plugs in axle shaft openings of transaxle. Plugs must be installed to prevent differential side gears from becoming mispositioned.
  13. Disconnect speedometer cable and electrical connections on transaxle. Remove clutch slave cylinder with line attached and secure aside. Remove front and rear transaxle mount bolts.
  14. Support engine with hoist. Remove engine mounts and upper transaxle mount. Remove engine and transaxle as an assembly.
