Removal (A/T Models)

  1. Release fuel pressure and disconnect fuel lines. See, in this article, FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE & FUEL LINE CONNECTIONS . Remove hood. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Drain cooling system. Remove air intake duct. Disconnect necessary electrical connections, coolant hoses and vacuum hoses. Remove air by-pass valve from throttle body.
  3. Remove ground strap on left side of cylinder head. Disconnect control cables from throttle body. Remove accelerator cable bracket from intake manifold.
  4. Raise and support vehicle. Remove lower splash shields. Disconnect transaxle cooler lines from radiator. Remove radiator cooling fan and shroud. Remove radiator.
  5. Discharge A/C system. Disconnect A/C line at accumulator-drier. Plug line openings to prevent contamination. Remove accessory drive belt, automatic tensioner and idler pulley. Disconnect power steering pump return hose from reservoir.
  6. Disconnect pressure hose from power steering pump. Disconnect power steering hose retaining bracket from alternator bracket. Position hoses out of the way. Remove A/C compressor with hoses attached and secure aside.
  7. Disconnect exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold. Remove front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter. Remove kickdown cable bracket from cylinder block. Remove flywheel cover and torque converter bolts.
  8. Remove crankshaft damper and starter motor. Support engine with hoist. Remove transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove engine mounts. Separate engine from transaxle and remove.
