Cylinder Head R & I: Removal

- Release fuel pressure and disconnect fuel lines. See, in this article, FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE & FUEL LINE CONNECTIONS .
- Drain cooling system. Remove air intake tube. Disconnect necessary electrical connections, vacuum hoses and coolant hoses. Disconnect ground strap at left side of cylinder head.
- Disconnect control cables from throttle body. Remove accelerator cable bracket from intake manifold. Remove dipstick retaining bolt from cylinder head.
- Remove power steering hose and A/C line bracket bolts from alternator bracket. Remove accessory drive belt and alternator. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT in this article.
- Remove exhaust pipe-to-exhaust manifold retaining bolts. Remove starter motor wiring harness from retaining clip below intake manifold. Remove heater hose support bracket from starter motor retaining bolt.
- Remove alternator bracket-to-cylinder head bolt. Disconnect breather hose and spark plug wire retainers from valve cover. Remove retaining bolts, valve cover and gasket.
- Evenly remove cylinder head bolts. Retain head bolts for step 6) and then discard. Remove cylinder head assembly.
CAUTION:
DO NOT lay cylinder head assembly flat on surface. Damage to spark plugs, valves and gasket surface may result.
