Cylinder Head: Removal

  1. Remove intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD . Remove front cover and timing chains. See FRONT COVER R & I  and TIMING CHAINS.
    CAUTION: DO NOT  rotate engine with timing chain removed, or valve/piston may be damaged.
  2. Disconnect exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds. Support exhaust pipes from crossmember using wire.
  3. Remove ground stud retaining heat coolant line at left cylinder head. Remove cylinder head bolts in sequence. See Figure. Bolts MUST be removed in sequence to prevent cylinder head damage. DO NOT  reuse bolts.
  4. Remove cylinder head and gasket. The lower rear cylinder head bolt cannot be removed. Hold bolt up with rubber band when removing cylinder head. See Fig 1.
