Pinpoint Test TD Temperature Gauge Always Indicates Cold Temperature (Bottom Bar Lit)
- Checking Temperature Gauge Wiring: Disconnect wiring from temperature sender, located on right side of engine, near No. 1 fuel injector. Connect jumper wire between temperature sender harness connector terminals.
- Turn ignition on. Temperature gauge should indicate a short circuit by blinking thermometer symbol and by displaying bottom 2 bars.
- If temperature gauge indicates a short circuit (CS), remove jumper wire and go to step 6). If temperature gauge does not indicate a short circuit, go to step 4).
- Checking Wiring At Instrument Cluster: Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. With jumper wire connected at temperature sender wiring connector, check for continuity between connector C2-2, pin No. 21 (Red/White wire) and C2-1, pin No. 4 (Pink/Orange wire) of wiring harness.
- If continuity exists, replace instrument cluster. If continuity does not exist, check Red/White wire to temperature gauge and temperature gauge ground circuit for an open.
- Checking Temperature Sender: Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Measure resistance between terminals of temperature sender. If resistance is less than 8000 ohms, replace instrument cluster. If resistance is greater than 8000 ohms, go to step 7).
- Checking Cooling System: Check thermostat, coolant level, etc. for proper operation. If cooling system components are defective, repair as necessary. If all cooling system components are okay, replace temperature sender.
