Pinpoint Test SD Speed Indication Varies Erratically
- Checking Driven Gear & Retainer Clip: Remove speed sensor from transmission. Ensure driven gear is in good condition and driven gear retainer clip is installed. If components are defective, replace as necessary. If components are in good condition, go to step 2).
- Checking Speed Sensor Wiring: Unplug connector at speed sensor on transmission. Using DVOM, measure resistance between wires in speed sensor harness connector.
- If resistance is greater than 500 ohms, go to step 4). If resistance is less than 500 ohms, repair wiring between instrument cluster and speed sensor.
- Checking Speed Sensor Resistance: Using DVOM, measure resistance between speed sensor terminals. If resistance is 200-230 ohms, go to step 5). If resistance is not within specification, replace speed sensor.
- Checking Wiring To Instrument Cluster: Reconnect speed sensor wiring. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Using DVOM, check for resistance between instrument cluster connector C2-2, pin No. 31 (Gray/Black wire) and connector C2-1, pin No. 4 (Pink/Orange).
- If resistance is 160-230 ohms, replace instrument cluster. If resistance is not within specification, check connections and wiring from instrument cluster to speed sensor. Repair as necessary.
