Pinpoint Test FF Inaccurate Fuel Indication - Full Not Indicated When Tank Is Full Or Empty Not Indicated When Tank Is Empty

  1. Checking Fuel Gauge Response: Disconnect negative battery cable. Lower fuel tank for access to fuel tank sending unit. Unplug connector at fuel tank sending unit.
  2. Connect a 43-ohm resistor between terminals of fuel tank sending unit harness connector. Reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on. Observe fuel gauge. Fuel gauge should display 3 or 4 bars. Fuel remaining should indicate 3-4 gallons.
  3. If all readings are okay, turn ignition off. Remove resistor. Proceed to step 6) If readings are not correct, turn ignition off, leave resistor connected and go to step 4).
  4. Checking Harness Wiring: Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between instrument cluster connector C2-1, pin No. 2 (Yellow/White wire) and connector C2-1, pin No. 4 (Pink/Orange) with 43-ohm resistor installed.
  5. If resistance is 42-45 ohms, replace instrument cluster. If resistance is not 42-45 ohms, repair wiring between instrument cluster and fuel tank sending unit.
  6. Checking Fuel Tank Sending Unit: Disconnect negative battery cable. Check fuel tank sending unit for binding, sticking, or misalignment. If fuel tank sending unit is damaged, replace sending unit. If fuel tank sending unit is okay, go to step 7).
  7. Checking Fuel Tank: Check fuel tank for dents, improper installation of filler tube, or other causes of improper sending unit operation. If components are defective, replace as necessary. If components are okay, fault is caused by another system on vehicle.
