Pinpoint Test AS Outside Temperature Wrong, Not To Extreme High Or Low

  1. Verifying Condition: Turn ignition on. Read outside temperature. Remove fuse No. 1 (Town Car) or No. 5 (Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis). Instrument cluster should go blank.
  2. After 30 seconds, reinstall fuse. Read outside temperature. If reading is correct, refer to pinpoint index for further testing. See Figure . If reading is incorrect, proceed to step 3).
  3. Resetting Air Temperature: Unplug electrical connector from air temperature sensor at radiator support. Air temperature sensor has Dark Blue/Yellow and Pink/Orange wires.
  4. Turn ignition on. Remove fuse No. 1 (Town Car) or No. 5 (Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis). Reinstall fuse after 30 seconds. Read outside air temperature. If reading is -40°F (-40°C), proceed to step 5). If reading is other than -40°F (-40°C) and incorrect, proceed to step 6).
  5. Checking Air Temperature Sensor: Measure resistance between air temperature sensor terminals. If resistance is 33,000-47,000 ohms at 60-70°F (16-21°C), return to step 1) and retest system. If resistance is not within specifications, replace air temperature sensor.
  6. Checking Connector: Unplug 16-pin (with Dark Blue/Yellow wire) connector at left rear corner of engine compartment at rear of wheel well. Turn ignition on. Remove fuse No. 1 (Town Car) or No. 5 (Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis). Reinstall fuse after 30 seconds. Read outside air temperature.
  7. If reading is -40°F (-40°C), repair wiring to 16-pin connector or to air temperature sensor. If reading is other than -40°F (-40°C) and incorrect, proceed to step 8).
  8. Checking Instrument Cluster: Remove instrument cluster finish panel. Unplug 12-pin connector from instrument cluster. See Figure . Using small screwdriver, release pin No. 1 (Pink/Orange wire) from connector. Reinstall connector. Turn ignition on.
  9. Remove fuse No. 1 (Town Car) or No. 5 (Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis). Reinstall after 30 seconds and read outside air temperature. If reading is -40°F (-40°C), repair wiring between instrument cluster and C1 connector. If reading is other than -40°F (-40°C), replace instrument cluster.
