Low Fuel Indicator (Cougar & Thunderbird)

  1. Unplug connector from Vehicle Maintenance Monitor (VMM). If vehicle is equipped with mechanical cluster, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with electronic cluster, go to step 3).
  2. Measure resistance between harness connector pin No. 6 and ground. If resistance is greater than 500 k/ohms, go to step 4). If resistance is less than 500 k/ohms, repair connector or wiring harness.
  3. Measure resistance between harness connector pin No. 6 and ground. If resistance is less than 500 ohms, go to step 6). If resistance is greater than 500 ohms, repair wiring harness or connector.
  4. Unplug connector at fuel gauge sending unit. Measure fuel gauge sending unit resistance. If resistance is less than 40 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, check fuel gauge circuit. See FUEL GAUGE INOPERATIVE under GAUGES TEST .
  5. Start vehicle, then within 16 seconds press and hold RESET switch on VMM for 4 seconds. After 4 seconds, entire display will flash. Monitor is now in tach input test. Press and release RESET switch to advance to FUEL OUTPUT SIGNAL test. If display indicates low fuel, stop and restart engine. Verify VMM is working properly. If display does not indicate low fuel, replace VMM. Retest system.
  6. Disconnect VMM. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between Yellow/Black wire at VMM harness connector and ground. If voltage is less than one volt, reconnect VMM. Go to step 5). If voltage is not as specified, check wiring harness and connectors between VMM and instrument cluster.
