Removal & Installation (Sable & Taurus)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Engage parking brake. Disable air bag system and remove steering wheel. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIP Section, and STEERING WHEEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIP Section.
  2. Remove ignition lock cylinder assembly. See LOCK CYLINDER (FUNCTIONAL) R & I or LOCK CYLINDER (NON-FUNCTIONAL) R & I under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIP section. Remove tilt control lever.
  3. Remove lower instrument panel trim cover under steering column. Remove steering column covers. Remove screws retaining lower left and radio finish panels. Snap panels out.
  4. On Taurus, remove clock or clock cover. Remove cluster finish panel retaining screws. Remove one jam nut behind headlight switch. Remove cluster finish panel by carefully pulling upper edge outward.
  5. On column shift models, disconnect transmission selector cable from steering column. On all models, disconnect upper speedometer cable from lower cable in engine compartment. Remove instrument cluster retaining screws.
  6. Carefully pull cluster assembly away from instrument panel enough to disconnect speedometer cable latch. Unplug cluster harness connectors. Remove instrument cluster. To install, reverse removal procedure. Adjust transmission selector indicator using thumbwheel.
