Axle Ratio & Identification
Differential can be identified as a Traction-Lok unit by 2 methods. One method is by raising rear of vehicle. Place transmission in Neutral. Rotate one rear wheel by hand. If both wheels rotate in same direction, differential is a Traction-Lok differential.
The other method is by referring to an identification tag attached to differential housing cover top bolt. Axle ratio, ring gear diameter and differential type are contained on axle code tag. See Fig 1 . The axle ratio number will contain the letter "L", if it is a Traction-Lok differential.
The Ford Motor Co. Vehicle Identification Label that is attached to left front door lock panel or pillar post, also contains an axle identification code. Axle identification code is located in the lower right corner column marked "AX". Axle ratio may also be determined by this code number/letter. See AXLE RATIO IDENTIFICATION table.
