Pinion Flange & Oil Seal: Installation
- Ensure all sealing surfaces are clean and free of burrs. Lubricate oil seal lips with multi-purpose lubricant. Using Seal Installer (T79P-4676-A), install oil seal. If oil seal becomes cocked during installation, remove and replace oil seal.
- Check pinion and companion flange splines for burrs. Coat companion flange splines with small amount of gear lubricant. Align marks on companion flange and pinion. Install companion flange on pinion. Coat washer side of NEW pinion nut with gear lubricant. Install pinion nut and washer.
- Using Companion Flange Holder (T78P-4851-A), hold companion flange and gradually tighten nut. DO NOT hammer or use power tools on companion flange. Rotate pinion to check pinion bearing preload until original preload is obtained.
- If original preload is less than specification, tighten to obtain proper specification. See AXLE ASSEMBLY SPECIFICATIONS table. If original preload was higher than specification, tighten nut to reach original preload.
- If desired preload is exceeded, a new collapsible spacer must be installed and nut retightened until proper preload is obtained. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Align scribe marks on companion flange and drive shaft. Fill axle with hypoid gear lubricant to bottom of fill hole.
