Inaccurate Fuel Indication, Full Not Indicated When Tank Is Full, Empty Not Indicated When Tank Is Empty
- Disconnect battery ground cable. Lower fuel tank to gain access to fuel sender connections. Connect 43-ohm resistor in place of fuel sender. Verify resistance of resistor prior to test. Reconnect battery. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Fuel gauge should illuminate 2 to 3 bars. Fuel remaining should read 3-4 gallons. If gauge reads properly, go to step 3).
- If gauge does not read properly, disconnect battery ground cable. Remove cluster and secure connectors to keep them from shorting. With 43-ohm resistor in place of fuel sender, measure resistance between pins No. 6 and No. 8 of cluster connector "A". If resistance is 42-45 ohms, replace cluster and affix odometer sticker to door pillar. If resistance is not 42-45 ohms, repair circuit No. 29 as required.
- Disconnect battery ground cable. Check fuel sender for binding, sticking, misalignment, etc. If sender is okay, go to next step. If sender is not okay, repair or replace as necessary.
- Check fuel tank for dents, bulges or other damage. Check for proper installation of fuel filler tube. If tank and tube are okay fault is caused by other vehicle systems. If tank and/or tube are not okay, replace fuel tank or filler tube.
