Display Partially Lit Or Completely Black

  1. Turn ignition switch to the RUN position. If all displays are Black, go to next step. If cluster is partially lit, check if all segments except the one selected go Black. If all segments except the one selected go Black, system is functioning properly. If cluster is partially Black, replace cluster and affix odometer sticker to door pillar.
    NOTE: Check local laws before affixing odometer sticker. Some states require replacement odometers be set to current mileage on vehicle. Odometer stickers cannot be used.
  2. Check circuits No. 797 and 298 for blown fuses (battery and run voltage to cluster). If fuses are blown, go to next step. If fuses are not blown, go to step 4).
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect battery ground cable. Connect ohmmeter from circuit with blown fuse to ground. If no continuity exists, replace fuse. If continuity exists, repair circuit as required.
  4. Connect battery. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage from circuits No. 797 and 298 to ground. If voltage is less than 9 volts, repair open in fuse holder.
  5. If voltage is greater than 9 volts, remove cluster but leave connected. Connect battery. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Wiggle connectors "A" and "B" on rear of cluster. If connectors are loose, repair as necessary.
  6. If connectors are not loose, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove cluster. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage at harness connectors "A" and "B". Battery voltage should be present at pins No. 7 and 9 of cluster connector "A" and pin No. 14 of cluster connector "B".
  7. Also check continuity to battery ground circuit at pin No. 8 of cluster connector "A" and pin No. 13 of cluster connector "B". If voltage and continuity are present, replace cluster and affix odometer sticker to door pillar. If voltage or continuity are not present, repair battery circuit No. 797, run circuit No. 298, or ground circuit No. 359.
  8. Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove cluster. Inspect flexible circuit traces (traces are double thick) connected to circuits No. 13 and No. 14 of cluster connector "B". If all tracers are good, replace cluster and affix odometer sticker to door pillar. If traces are not good, replace flexible circuit.
